2 Day tour to Skaftafell and Jokulsarlon “Breidamerkursandi”

 1st day

A day filled with spectacular sights. We will visit the impressive waterfall of Seljalandsfoss and waterfall Skógafoss. Optional visit to the Skogar Folk museum, we will drive to the magical Reynirsfjara beach with its basaltic columns where puffins can be spotted during the summer. We will see the lava fields Eldhraun  from 1783 with a total area of 565 km² and the total volume of tephra is estimated to have been 12,3 km³.  The consequences were enormous.  Between 53% and 82% of the domestic animals and 20% of the human population perished as a result.  At the end of the day we will come by the small village Kirkjubæjarklaust there we will take small walk at magnificent Fjarðárgljúfur two-kilometer long canyon that was formed in huge floods for thousands of years ago. Overnight near Skaftafell

Accommodation in private facilities included and breakfast at the 2 day, over night at Country hotel near Skaftafell.

2st Day

We will visit Skaftafell national park, which is dominated by Vatnajökull, Europe´s largest ice cap with the highest peak of the island, Hvannadalshnjúkur (2111m).  we wil take a 1 1/2 hour hiking up to Svartfoss waterfall. At one of the Glacier is opportunity to take an easy glacier walk on crampons up on to the ice field (about 11/2 hour walk.) It is an experience you never forget. You will be shown how to use the equipment be four your walk on the ice field with your guide. Please note; glacier walk is not included in the tour price and unsuitable for children under 12 years.  From Skaftafell we continue the tour to Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon. You will see amazing blocks of ice that have broken off Europe’s biggest glacier, Vatnajökull. These blocks of ice are drifting slowly towards the ocean, which is not far away.  We can take a boat tour on the lagoon in the summertime.

After the visit to the lagoon we head back to Reykjavík.

Things to take along on a trip like this would be:

Good hiking shoes, camera, warm outdoor clothing, waterproof jacket and pants. Remember that Icelandic weather can change suddenly without prior warning.
